Hey! I don't live in Cleveland, but I might be moving there in the near-ish future and going to Cleveland State...

I can and have found out info about the school from other sources, but I was wondering more what it's like to live around the CSU area, especially on the downtown side...Liveability? Crime? Etc?

Any info at all would be super helpful. Thanks!

If you have a car, I'd recommend someplace at the end of the West Shoreway, like Clifton, Baltic, or Lake roads (or any of the numbered streets around there.) It is only about ten minutes from downtown, and has relatively low crime, you can walk to the stores and the bank, and there are tons of great restaurants within walking distance too. Oh, and it is also a very short walk to Lake Erie and Edgewater park.
There is also good bus service in this area, if you don't have a car.

I used to go to school right by CSU. The area isn't that great. Totally fine in the day time, but I'd never go outside at night. If you want to experience life "downtown", CSU isn't the greatest place in my opinion.

Also, the natives from Cle are going to hate me noting this, but Cleveland is in the top ten most miserable places to live right now. Why are you looking to move there?

I just talked to someone about that miserable thing. Really? The included our weather and sports teams in that? lol Truly miserable, indeed.

Forbes determines the most miserable cities by these:

Commute times
Income tax rates
Superfund sites
Unemployment
Violent crimes
Weather

So they didn't really take the sports teams into consideration. They just wrote about LeBron in the article.

Things that actually matter from that list:

Commute times
Unemployment
Violent crime rates
Corruption (how exactly do they determine that, though?)

Things that don't matter:

Income tax rates - Higher taxes USUALLY indicate more public services, and therefore a happier populace. Around the world, the places with the highest tax rates are regularly rated as having the happiest people. However, there's no real way to easily quantify taxation to service, and therefore no real way to utilize taxes in a measure of happiness of a location.

Superfund sites - They're dotted all over the country, and nobody really notices in their day to day lives. They're hidden in weedy lots and abandoned factories and other things people normally pass by without even noticing, and they're all slowly being cleaned up.

Weather - Unless they're purely basing it on the whole "more sunny days equals more happy people", there's no real way to quantify it. Some people like snow, some people hate it. Some people like summer sun, some people hate it. And generally, if someone's going to move to a place, they're going to know a bit about it's climate beforehand.

Which Forbes article was this, anyway? Got a link? I'm curious to read it.

Oh, forgot about corruption, too. They just added that component.

While you're entitled to your opinion, I do wonder why you'd hang around a Cleveland community if you don't feel positive about the city. It doesn't seem that productive, given that most of the people who come on here are going to be looking for information that is more constructive than "eww why would you want to live there?" People can get that opinion everywhere.

Cleveland Heights is probably your best bet for living if you're attending CSU. About fifteen minutes and less than 10 miles from CSU and convenient to the bus. Living terribly close to CSU may not be a great idea.

[info]rpb3000

February 24 2009, 03:42:50 UTC 3 years ago

How is crime in the area? It's city. I used to attend CSU and was there often late at night, even into the wee hours of the morning. The only problems I ever had were nagging panhandlers, but they're not much of a threat. I've heard tales of muggings, carjackings, and other mostly theft-related crimes. If you're used to city, you won't have a problem. If you're used to suburb or country, you might not want to go there.

Mass transit in Cleveland is very good and going to CSU lets you ride for free, so you're not tied to living near the school. Most people commute, although there are a few dorms and there are more in the works. The nearest apartment buldings are really expensive; I wouldn't bother with those. The neighborhood between the innerbelt and E 55th isn't the worst, has a number of great Asian groceries and restaurants, and very affordable housing, so a number of CSU students live around there. The rest commute from various areas or home; other favorite student rental spots include the Edgewater area and Cleveland Heights. Both have very quick access to CSU via bus or rapid.

"It's city." Cleveland is one of the worse cities in the States for crime... That's one thing Ohio can brag about, almost all major our cities are in the worse 25 for poverty/crime.

[info]rpb3000

February 24 2009, 05:57:54 UTC 3 years ago

Yeah, mostly because certain parts of the east side are basically anarchy zones where gang and drug related violence is relatively commonplace. Downtown Cleveland is overall safer then downtown Columbus (where I currently live), and I think a big part of that is because there's actually people who live around downtown Cleveland and things to do in downtown Cleveland at night, unlike here in Columbus.

Besides that, Cleveland only ranks in crime lists if you only look at large cities. Also, the reports most people talk about when they spew this noise are from 2006; the FBI releases an updated list of total numbers of various crimes every year. The latest data has been compiled on Wikipedia in a nice little table where you can sort by column headers if you so feel:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_States_cities_by_crime_rate

If you go by the Infoplease list, which doesn't really list where it got it's info, it still shows that crime has been falling rather than increasing in Cleveland (and in the nation as a whole) Also, the only ones that show up on their list are Cleveland and Youngstown.:

http://www.infoplease.com/us/cities/safest-dangerous-cities.html

Ooh, seems they used the "official" CQ Press report, which basically averages the FBI data. A more in depth look at those same results is here:

http://www.walletpop.com/mortgages/dangerous-cities

And for a whole assortment of various interesting stats, check out the following:

http://www.city-data.com/top27.html
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c404.html
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c405.html
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c408.html
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c412.html
http://www.city-data.com/top2/c425.html

tl;dr stop spreading stupid, baseless rumors. I repeat: Cleveland city is city. If you're used to city, you won't have any problems you're not already used to. If you're not used to city, you might have problems if you can't quickly develop common sense.

Cleveland is a crime-ridden shithole. One of the least desirable places to live in in the States. Holy shit you're from Oregon and you're thinking about Ohio? Don't do it~!! This boggles me. It's like someone intentionally being backed over by a bus.

Don't mind some of the folks on this list. For a lot of them anything outside the 'burbs is baaaad.

I used to know some people that lived down there several years ago and I don't remember them having any problems down there. I have no idea what it's like nowadays tho.

February 24 2009, 09:31:03 UTC 3 years ago

Yeah that's why people from New York City, Chicago, Toronto, San Francisco and other major metropolis areas get here and say "what a dump" and the cops scatter from most neighborhoods after dusk.

Posing to you the same question I did to the previous person: Why are you continuing to be part of this community if your experience of Cleveland is overwhelmingly negative and you suggest you want to move? You're entitled to your opinions, but when someone is asking for advice on a forum for Cleveland life, you spouting off about how much the city sucks isn't particularly useful to them.

Speaking as the moderator, if you want to discuss how much the city sucks, kindly make your own post and argue with people on there, rather than trolling with people on other posts. Thanks.

I think regarding some of the comments that are made the best thing to do is "consider the source" as there are people who habitually enjoy making negative comments on this community to get a rise out of other people.

Having been in a lot of cities, Cleveland does have a lot of crime but so does any economically depressed city. It tends to be concentrated in particular areas. Having a cop tell you not to drive through a certain area or stop at particular intersections is hardly unique to Cleveland. I'm also presuming that anyone thinking of moving to Cleveland already can read and google on the web and knows a lot of the crime statistics rather than being some rube who just fell off the hick bus from nowhere.

The area around CSU is what you'd expect from a university: there is some crime but overall it's fairly well policed due to the large number of people coming and going. I don't think I'd like to live that close to the college, not because it's awful but because being a commuter school the area tends to get pretty dead at night. The far west side of Cleveland, or Lakewood, are better places to hang out and they're on a bus line if you won't be driving in, although a car is a really helpful thing to have.

February 24 2009, 17:10:39 UTC 3 years ago

It's unique when you're only a few blocks from the downtown core area

February 24 2009, 17:45:22 UTC 3 years ago

wow. I left, and although I sure don't miss the snow, I do sometimes miss good ole Clevo. . . I left for school, not cos Cleveland sucked. I miss the metroparks, edgewater, the zoo, dim sum and the asian market, the christmas lights, most of downtown, the bars, the music, the way you had 40,000 different little nooks in about 25 miles, the thunderstorms, the old trees, the goofy old ladies and pierogi.

I live in a very scenic and super-poor part of the country now, and I can authoritatively say, Cleve is not that bad. Some parts of it suck, yes. Some most decidedly do not. Just like every other city everywhere.
